Join us at the farm for muscadine grape picking season! Opening day is Wednesday, August 8th from 10:00 am — 2:00 pm, but the You Pick will continue throughout the month during normal farm hours (Wednesday through Sunday from 10:00 — 2:00 pm).

Pick your basket's fill of muscadine grapes, meet the Congaree and Penn team, explore the farm, and enjoy the fruits of your labor.

When you arrive, muscadine baskets will be available to purchase in the farm shop. The grapevines are waiting for you just beyond the quonset hut patio. Farm lunch (Friday through Saturday), Farm Cider, beer, wine and charcuterie will be available to enjoy on the quonset hut patio before or after your picking adventure.

Please keep in mind that quantities are limited. We cannot guarantee that there will be enough muscadine grapes for each guest to pick.

Small baskets are $5 each, medium baskets are $10 each and large berry baskets are $15 each. Only Congaree and Penn baskets may be used for berry picking. We cannot guarantee that each size will be available on the day you to choose to pick.

We get a lot of questions. Here are your answers!

Q: What is a muscadine grape?

A: At first glance, muscadines may appear to be the green and red grapes you're used to seeing in your grocery store. But look more closely and you'll see that they are bigger and rounder than those grapes, and the skin is thicker.

They are native to the south, and with all of the humidity and the heat down here, the tough skin protects them from a lot of the fungal diseases. The skin also has health benefits; it’s especially high in antioxidants. Muscadines are rich in total phenolic compounds, ellagic acid, and catechins, which may help ward off cancer.

Beneath that thick skin is a soft inside riddled with seeds. This is often a drawback for some pickers, but the health benefits and the activities of picking, chewing (and spitting seeds) tend to keep muscadine consumers grinning.

Q: What are the farm's hours?

A: We’re open Wednesday through Sunday from 10:00 am — 2:00 pm. You are welcome to pick grapes any time during these hours.

Q: Will you have muscadine grapes available on the day that I want to pick?

We have a lot of fruit on the vines, but we cannot promise that there will be grapes on the vines on the day that you would like to pick. We'll keep everyone posted on the weekly status of the grapes.

Q: What else can I do at Congaree and Penn?

A: There’s a whole farm to enjoy. Sip some cider (or beer and wine), enjoy a farm lunch (Friday through Sunday), let the kids run free, take your dog on a walk, take yourself on a walk, and savor the outdoors.

Q: Do you accept credit cards?

A: Of course; we live in 2018, too.

Q: Tell me about the baskets.

A: Only Congaree and Penn baskets may be used for picking. The basket is yours to keep, and the price includes the grapes. Small baskets are $5 and hold about one pound of grapes. Medium baskets are $10 and hold about two pounds of grapes. Large baskets are $15 and hold about three pounds of grapes.

Q: Do you take reservations?

A: We do not.

Q: What's the weather like?

A: It's hot. And it's wet. That means the vineyard might be mucky. We don't love it either.

Q: Can I bring my dog?

A: Of course! Well behaved dogs on leashes are always welcome. Please clean up after Fido (and take the droppings with you, even if you've used a biodegradable bag), and please keep your canine companions away from the chickens and goats.

Q: Do I need to worry about snakes and alligators (and lions and tigers and bears) at the farm?

A: Not really. We've never seen an alligator at the farm. We haven't seen a snake in over a year. The wildest thing you'll likely see is our rooster. But the great outdoors is full of surprises.
