The Jacksonville Dog Cafe along with Hammond Heating and Air Conditioning presents:

«Sit. Stay. Listen.» — A nine-month long speaking series all about dogs. Our first speaker of the series is Mr. Jim Crosby. Mr. Crosby has graciously agreed to kick off our series with important, interesting topics from his extensive background and years as an expert in all things dog related. Happy Hour at Ale Pie House is 2pm — 7pm. Come enjoy delicious Italian food and drinks before we promptly begin at 7pm.

About the speaker: James Crosby M.S., CBCC-KA, is a retired Police Lieutenant (Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, Jacksonville, FL) and has professionally trained dogs and addressed canine behavior problems since 1999. He served as Division Management Consultant for Jacksonville Animal Care and Protective Services, the municipal animal services agency for Florida’s largest city. Jacksonville Animal Care and Protective Services Division not only handles rescue and adoption needs, but the staff of 48 also investigates animal cruelty, fighting, gives support for owners of pets in need, and investigates and regulates Dangerous Dogs for the 964 square miles and nearly 1 million residents of Jacksonville.

Jim is one of less than 50 people worldwide who have earned a Master of Science degree in Veterinary Forensic Medicine from the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine, and is only the third person to do so with a full thesis. His thesis, “The Specific Use of Evidence in the Investigation of Dog Bite Related Human Fatalities” is a detailed examination of the investigative needs of these unique cases from an evidentiary perspective. Jim is recognized as an expert in the US, Canada and the UK on Dangerous Dogs and related issues. He has personally investigated over 25 fatal dog attacks on humans and, has post-attack, evaluated nearly 50 dogs that have attacked and killed humans.

Jim teaches safe handling and rehabilitation of Dangerous Dogs and Investigation of Fatal and Serious Dog Attacks to police, animal control agencies, and others across the US and internationally in Italy, Canada, the UK, and Poland.

Jim combines his prior Police experience with his animal behavior and investigative skills to consult on cases of police officer involved shootings to companion animals. He has trained Police Officers in the proper and safe avoidance of dog bites and the proper use of less-lethal tools to avoid injury from dogs. Jim is part of the team of experts that designed the dog encounter training program for the State of California Commission on Police Officer Standards and Training for Peace Officers in California. Jim is a member of the National Coalition on Violence Against Animals and is the working group co-chair regarding Use of Force by Police, working towards developing a national curriculum addressing police/dog encounters.

Jim is a contributor to the book “Dog Bites – A Multidisciplinary Approach” to be released in the summer of 2017 by the University of Lincoln, Lincolnshire, England and writes the popular dog aggression blog “Canine Aggression Issues with Jim Crosby”.
